El Deafo

on September 2, 2015
Cece Bell lost her hearing from a bout of meningitis when she was four years old. In this memoir, told and illustrated as a graphic novel, Cece relates how her family tried to help hercope with this loss. She attempts to learn lip reading until she is outfitted with a Phonic Ear in the first grade. The best thing about wearing the Phonic Ear is that it equips her with secret super powers becausesuddenly, she can hear her teacher not just when she’s in the classroom, but in the teacher’s lounge, the hallway, and even the bathroom. When Cece’s family moves and she has to start a new school, her loneliness and need for friendships are complicated the self-consciousness she feels wearing her clunky Phonic Ear. Will the superpowers it brings help her with what she wants more than anything else, a true friend?

I like El Deafo because she dosn’t care what people think about her and the author did a good job on what she was thinking like the time when she thought she was a superhero. Also the pictures look really good and it looks like its made of crayons but theres no different shades it’s all solid.

  9. diamond peek termanator says:

I think sometimes it’s supposed to be sad but it’s really not because after you read for a while you understand what is happening Most her friends where mean to her and she found new ones.

  13. Matthew says:

This book can be very relatable to people with loss of one of their 5 senses luckily I am not one of those people but I still do feel bad for people with a loss of one of their senses but this book can make you think about the bright, cool and funny side of things when you have losses. like they say, every cloud has a silver lining.

This book is full of ups and downs, but it teaches kids what some peoples lives are like. A way that makes you realise that peoples feelings get hurt easier than you think. But it’s so AMAZING and INSPIRING!

Cece Bell has lost her hearing due to some sort of sickness. Cece Bell is a bunny rabbit who can talk and breathe. she is having trouble finding friends and keeping them. She has a crush who is very confuseing. El Deafo is the best DCF book i’ve read so far, if you are not sure if you will enjoy it or not, you most definitely will enjoy El Deafo.

  30. pmanbballPW says:

I really like El Deafo. I feel that its kind of inspirational and tragic at the same time. Its inspirational for the people who might have the same condition. It is tragic the way her life is and how many friendships she goes in and out of.

  31. Soccer crazy EO says:

I think this book is going to win because of how it’s a really story about this little girl becomes deaf a good story.

  33. JUSTIN says:

El Deafo was good but I think it was a little dramatic in some places like when the dog bit her and she got scarred. I preferred Ice Dogs because it was a survival story.

  34. GooseJCG AKA... JDOG says:

  41. AlexanderVT says:

Owen I agree with you. It Is sad that cece lost her sight and her friend didn’t hang out with her for awhile. Because it is annoying to not hear not see well from what I think. Also I don’t like to be alone, because I an board in my experiences and it seems she is board a lot when alone. I was happy because of the happy end.

  42. AlexanderVT says:

Toni I agree with you. I really like that the author said it was a true story. The book is really cool because it is “turned into visual format” as you said, which makes it way more appealing for me.

  43. KelleyDvt says:

    Aiden
how does it remind you of a fairy tale. I always thought of a fairy tale as “once upon a time”.
