When Life Gives You O.J.
May 13, 2012
Zelly Fried wants a dog more than anything, so at the urging of her grandfather, during the summer before sixth grade she takes care of a “practice dog” made out of an orange juice jug to show her parents that she is ready for the responsibility, even though she is sometimes not entirely sure about the idea.

love this book so funny
I really love this book. It was great an inspiring. It was funny when Ace (grandpa) gave her a orange juice jug and told her to use it as a dog.
I would be embarrassed to if I had to walk around town with a jug with a collar around it. But the ending was great. I loved when she finally got a puppy.
The little brother is kinda funny too.
I recommend this book to kids that like children’s fiction and some great comedy.
The book is very funny and I think all of you should read this book
when we had to rite or draw and we made a fake dog and we brought it home and pretended it was our own O.J. on a milk jug.
Cool! How did the students in your class like it? — Kate Davie
I love this book!! It is very funny, I think all of you will like it!
READ IT!!!!!!
Really good book! But kinda weird at the beginning
This year my my favorite DCF book is When LIfe Gives You OJ. I like this book because a girl wants a dog and her Grandpa “Ace” knows about that. So one day she wakes up and Ace had left her a note. I liked this book because it’s exciting and has some bumps in the road along the way. But you’ll have to read the book to find out more .
I LOVE this book! It’s such a fun book.Erica Perl is a great author!
This book is like a lesson mixed with an amazing story! There are so many characters with so many different traits. If anyone can get to read this book I totally recommend it!
I liked it! Give it a try.
This book was very interesting book!

advice: Not a good book, Dont read it: seriously stupid
There is a big difference between a truly stupid book and one that just doesn’t happen to work for you. Although this book didn’t work for you, it has for plenty of other DCF readers. Can you be more specific about what you didn’t like, to help other readers decide whether or not they want to try it? — Kate Davie
I loved this book and would read it again, but the only thing I didn’t like was that Ace (grandfather) TALKED IN ALL CAPITALS.
Why do you think Ms. Perl wrote Ace’s dialog in caps? What it make you imagine Ace differently? — Kate Davie
i like this book because of the orange juice carton dog on the cover it is fuuny.
What do you think of the orange juice carton dog on the inside? — Kate Davie
This book is very funny. I found it interesting from the beginning.
I loved this book and it was about this 11 year old girl named Zelly who really wants a dog but her parents won’t allow her to. Her grandfather has a crazy plan to take an OJ jug and turn it into a practice dog. I think people should read this book if they want a good laugh. My favorite character was her grandfather because he was really funny.
Zelly is a girl who moved from brooklyn and went to vermont.
She really wants a dog and she pleads to her mom and dad, after her grandma died. Then zelly got a note on a orange juice jug from her grandpa and went downstairs to meet him.
she thought he was crazy when he told her about the practice dog.she tried it and it didn’t work out well.she fell in his pactice waste. and she thought every body would make fun of her about it.
Did you enjoy reading about Zelly and her non-dog? — Kate Davie
I did not like this book but i bet other people will
This book is crazy, hilarious, and, awesome all rolled into one!
Zelly is my favorite character be cause she is very brave to follow through with her grandfather’s plan in attempt to get a dog.
i really liked this book. i thought that it was funny because she wants a dog so bad that she follows her grandfathers advice! i would recommend this book.
I like the book When Life Gives you O.J. by Erica Perl. Zella Fried is a 6th grade girl who wants a dog. Her grandfather gave her an orange juice jug and dressed it up looking like a dog. Zella has to do all the things you have to do for a dog. She wants to pretend it is a dog so her parents will think she can get a dog. My favorite thing was when she had to fill the jug up with water and stuff and dump it out and pretend it is the dog going to the bathroom. I think people who want a dog but their parents won’t let them should read this book.
Do you think they should give it to their parents to read too? — Kate Davie
This book is really like book I think you would like this book
Very funny. I enjoyed reading about this girl who wanted a dog so bad that she was willing to follow her grandfather’s idea.
This book is the best. I luv it once you get to the middle you cant stop. the end is great.

The book is funny
Do you think it would have been more funny or less funny if it hadn’t been set in Vermont? — Kate Davie

This book was very entertaining and funny. It is surprising that she would have a fake dog just to get a real one. Most of the characters are creative. I recommend this book to anyone who likes a twist of silly to sad.
I really like your phrase, “a twist of silly to sad”! – Kate Davie
this looks like a weird.
Well, weird is better than boring! — Kate Davie
This book is so funny, and I love it because the story has many characters and all of the book is exciting! I love When Life GivesYou O.J.
I have read this book!! It is very boring in the beginning but just wait until you get to the middle… You won’t wanna put it down.!!
Can you tell us (without spoiler info!) what it that piques your interest after the beginning? — Kate Davie
This book sounds like a comedy book. It also has a true story …what little kid doesn’t want a dog ? I would definitely love to read this book.
