Water Balloon

May 13, 2012

by Audrey Vernick

With her best friends pulling away from her, her newly-separated parents deciding she should spend the summer at her father’s new home, and a babysitting job she does not want, Marley’s life is already as precarious as an overfull water balloon when a cute boy enters the picture.

I think that the book Water Balloon by Audrey Vernick should win. I love this book! I think that a lot of girls will vote for this book because it is about 3 best friends trying to hang out in the summer together; something that I think many girls understand. I think that sometimes it is a little crazy for Marley with her babysitting plus a cute boy, and also her friends are at a summer camp together and poor Marley can only listen to all of the fun they are having! This is a story that many girls love and will vote for so I think that it will win.

The book Water Balloon by Audrey Vernick should win the DCF award because it has a great amount of events that are going on. People can relate to this book because it is just a girl that is a normal student in school, and during the summer facing her own personal things. This book has a great set of emotions between the main character with her friends and a family. People can relate to this story, especially people who likes realistic fiction. It’s a great story about friends and family struggles, which make the character become closer than they have been before.

I really like this book so far! I am really surprised that Marley is mean! She doesn’t seem to be that kind of person! When I started the book I thought she was really nice turns out she is not! I would recommend this book to any girl not so much for a boy they might not understand what she is going through.

Ooh, PP, that’s a very interesting comment! What was it that Marley did that made you think she is mean? — Kate Davie

water Ballon is a grate book in kindergarden marly had a water ballon fight and marly’s mom and dad split up. She hates her dad’s house and her dad made her babysit two kids next door. I liked Marley because she stays strong and doesn’t give up on things.

kate what do you do if someone coppies your user name on the blog.

I suppose I could not approve someone’s screen name on the grounds that it could be confused with someone else’s. This particular pseudo-Sparkle uses a variety of names, though, and may really be more of a Sparkle Brother, so I don’t anticipate any problems! — Kate Davie

I love this book and can’t believe the real Audrey vernick commented on it I almost passed out when I saw it.I wonderif she will make another book about Marley or another girl? :)

I don’t see any mention of a sequel on her website (www.audreyvernick.com) but she has an e-mail address on the page about school visits. Maybe you could ask her if she has any plans for another Marley book. — Kate Davie

I think Water Balloon was a great book! Marley has to deal with a lot of hard things in her life and I’m surprised with how she deals with them. I like how in the end she kind of enjoyed babysitting the twins when she thought she never would! I think Water Balloon is a great book to read!

Growing up is hard enough without your parents living in two houses. It is interesting how you outgrow some friends yet can keep others.

This is one of my favorite DCF books so far. It makes you feel like, what would you do if you were in Marlys shoes. She makes decisions that youmay not agree with nd wish she had chosen a different path to take. She hits so many bumps in the road, but I like how she finds a way to let them past her. She doesn’t let her problems stand in her way. What makes this book so great is how Marly deals with some horrible things going on in her life.

This book is awesome it is really good. I like how Marley gets in a bunch of stuff that she doesn’t want to do. But, she can usually make it work. I also feel bad that she is in this big bad situation.

  •    SL  |  November 8th, 2012 at 9:14 am

The book Water Balloon is full of different events. When reading this book I can really relate to it, because the girl is in school like a normal student and then during the summer she has to deal with things on her own like any other kid would do. Some things that I wonder about in the book, though are if she really is having that hard of a time or maybe she is just not looking on the bright side. I think that this book gives you ways about relating to other peoples’ lives. Some peoples’ parents may not live in the same house and her parents don’t, so I can really relate to that.

I’m really glad that you thought that Marley could have had a more positive outlook — I had that same impression, but then I thought maybe that was just because I am older than her. — Kate Davie

  •    PurpleCupcakeSneakers  |  September 16th, 2012 at 1:25 pm

Aack! This book was SO GOOD! Perfectly relatable to anybody who’s ever had friendship issues (I believe that would be EvErYbOdY?!) or babysitting woes (Again, mostly EvErYbOdY) or family drama (You may be getting sick of me saying eVeRyBoDy, but uh…) In short, this book is not one that is far-fetched with the plot line, but the dialog and writing style is fun and quirky. I started using some new words/phrases after this. This is a very fun book.

I love this book. It’s about this girl named Marley, her parents are seperated and Marley is staying with her dad for a few weeks in the summer. Marley has lots of problems through out this book, mainly about her two best friends not treating her right. Also her dad or her parents seperation. On top of her problems she has to babysit five year old twins, who can not sit still. She’s also worried about her grandmother. Good thing Marley made a friend to talk to. Jack (her friend) takes her mind off these things. Marley may even be falling in love. Read the book to find out more.
