In 1893 New York, thirteen-year-old Maks, a newsboy, teams up with Willa, a homeless girl, to clear his older sister, Emma, from charges that she stole from the brand new Waldorf Hotel, where she works. Includes historical notes.

I think that the DCF book that should win this year is City of Orphans. This is a well written story about a struggle to clear a close relative of charges that she’s accused of. The storyline is very creative, having a newsboy team up with a homeless girl to rescue his sister from being prosecuted. I found it incredible how a brother could care so much about his sister to go to such lengths to free her from a dark future in prison. I don’t like how sometimes the poor is often blamed for things they didn’t do. Overall, I think that Avi has created a fantastic story, and has done a great job of recreating 1893 New York City.
I loved City of Orphans and I hope to vote for it soon.

The city of orphans is areally great book! I started reading it and got pretty far into it but I didin’t finish it . I kinda just pick up a book and read. I really look forward to start reading it again!!

There is this kid named Maks who is a newsie. One day he almost got robbed by Bruno, leader of the Plug Uglies gang. They got chased into an alley when a girl named Willa saved him by beating the Plug Uglies with a stick. I recommend this book for most people because it is action packed and fun to read.
It was a really interesting book to read. I also like the book because it has a lot of action in the book

Hmm. You must have read a very different edition of this book than the one I read. There is some violence in it, but I don’t think it is accurate to say that is what the book is about. What do you think is the most important theme of the book? — Kate Davie
City of Orphans is my favorite book because it had action and it had suspense. I think that it was cool that it had a lot of fast paced action. I was also a mystery in some parts. I think that it was interesting how the people were mean and didn’t know that much about showers.
This book has horrible grammar, but other than that irs really good.

I really liked the character Willa in this book. She is strong and knows how to fend for herself. I also like Emma who is a lot like me. I really like books by the author. This book is my favorite by far.

City of orphans gets 5 stars from me this book is definitely in my top 5 favorite!
